Getting started right can make a big difference – helping to prevent leaks, avoid irritation, and keep your baby comfortable.

This guide focuses on one thing: how to choose the right size newborn nappy and make sure it fits properly.

How does newborn nappy size work?

In the UK, newborn nappy size is decided based on weight, not age. This helps ensure a better fit, as babies grow at different rates.

Nappy size chart for newborns

Pampers Premium Protection New Baby Nappies, specially designed for newborns, come in the following sizes.

size 0 1 2 3
Your baby’s weight in kilograms less than 3 kg 2-5kg 4-8 kg 6-10kg
your baby’s weight in pounds less than 6 pounds 4-11lb 9-18lb 13-22lb

If you’re unsure about your baby’s weight, your midwife or health visitor can help.

What size nappy should I pack in my hospital bag?

Most newborns will need a size 0-2 nappy depending on their birth weight. It’s a good idea to pack a few of each smaller size in your hospital bag to try.

How to check that your newborn’s nappy fits properly

A well-fitting nappy should feel secure but not tight. You can do some quick checks every now and then
change your baby
: :

  • The waistband should be just below your baby’s navel
  • You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably under the waistband
  • The nappy should completely cover your baby’s bottom
  • Leg cuffs should fit comfortably without any gaps

Gently run your fingers around the leg cuffs after fastening to make sure they are positioned correctly – this helps prevent leaks.

Signs your baby’s nappy is too small

Even if your baby’s weight is within limits, the nappy fit may still not be right. You may need to size up if you notice:

  • Tying tabs do not reach the center of the waistband
  • The waistband feels tight or leaves red marks
  • The nappy does not completely cover your baby’s bottom
  • frequent leaks or blowouts
  • Your baby feels uncomfortable during or after the change

When should I go up a nappy size?

children grow quicklySo it’s normal to move up in size faster than you expect.

As a general rule, if your baby is hitting the top of the weight range, fitting in and you’re experiencing leakage, consider going up a size.

Choosing the right size is one of the easiest ways to improve both comfort and leak protection.

Pampers Premium Protection New Baby Nappies feature graphics on the front of the nappy that can help parents and carers assess the fit of the nappy. Depending on where the tapes fall, it can help indicate when it’s time to go up a size.

Does nappy size affect leaks?

Yes: Size and fit are the two biggest causes of leaks.

A nappy that is too small may not absorb enough volume or may not fit properly around the legs and waist. A nappy that is too large may leave gaps where leakage can escape.

And remember: you’ll want nappies that prevent leaks, even when your baby is lying down. Pampers Premium Protection New Baby Nappies feature a Stop & Protect pocket to catch messy leaks and prevent them from reaching your baby’s back.

Why fit isn’t just about size?

The right size matters, but it also matters how the nappy is designed.

Features like soft, stretchy material and secure leak barrier help the nappy fit better and stay in place as your baby moves.

For example, Pampers Premium Protection New Baby Nappies include a DermaComfort layer that draws moisture away from delicate skin, as well as a Stop & Protect pocket to help prevent leaks in the back. They are also the only newborn nappies approved by the British Skin Foundation.

It may take a little trial and error at first to find the right fit, but it makes a real difference to your baby’s comfort. Once you get the shape right, everything else becomes a little easier.
