Smart plugs are inexpensive ways to add automation to the home.

Smart bulbs for key locations
Smart bulbs add everything from mood lighting to extra alarm oomph.
Smart bulbs plug into standard bulb sockets and most models these days don’t require an additional hub to work. You simply screw them in, bring the app to connect, and control them as you wish. These bulbs are great for dimming and brightening lights throughout the day, setting mood lighting at certain times, or connecting to alarms and other smart home statuses. A standalone air quality monitor

Arlo All-in-One Sensor Security System
Arlo’s do-it-all sensors are great for a small space.

For this we endorse Arlo’s security system, which has 8-in-1 sensors that can do everything from detecting door opens to monitoring for leaks, wherever you place them.
Some of these Arlo sensor rentals ($100 total) can fill several different roles. If renters move to a more permanent home, they can also add a compatible doorbell and Arlo fob. Just keep in mind that features like smart alerts and video storage require a subscription.
Ikea’s extra affordable security sensor
Ikea’s smart appliances are simple, cheap and effective.
If rent is eating up most of your cash, you probably aren’t interested in spending much on home security technology. Ikea has once again come to the rescue This is the new series of low-budget home security sensors. I have tried them all, they work very well and you can buy each sensor one at a time or together depending on your requirement.
Ikea’s model includes an access sensor, motion sensor, leak detector, temperature/humidity detector and carbon dioxide tracker/clock, a perfect little combo kit for an apartment or rental. Most sensors are available for around $10, or you can buy a complete kit for around $65.
The best part is that Ikea’s sensors are fully compatible with Matter, so they can work with Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home. The problem is that you need a compatible hub, like a Nest smart display, an Apple HomePod mini or the new Apple TV, an Echo smart speaker, etc. Without these, you’ll have to buy an additional Ikea hub for about $100 (but even so, it’s still the cheapest DIY security setup I’ve found).
a standalone camera
Tapo’s affordable cam is a great standalone model.

Although it’s more smart home-adjacent than smart technology, a countertop air fryer meets all kinds of quick-heating needs. It lets even beginners cook food like hamburgers, fries, chicken wings, pizza and many other delicious, quick meals that are much healthier than traditional frying. Most models also let you slow-roast, bake, reheat, and more, making them a great centerpiece for small kitchens.
