For many influencers and the social elite, the event of the year is just around the corner. Every April, half the population of California heads to the Coachella Valley desert for a music festival featuring the year’s hottest artists.

With all the hustle and bustle that comes with a festival, fast fashion brands like white fox And Wandering Sure to dress up any celebrations, gifting suites and hosting private parties adds to the popularity of the brand.

But while these brands continue to build their popularity through impressive displays, a competitive option is to show attendees at another festival something different from the norm by breaking away from the norms of fast fashion trends and creating unique fashion statements through the use of vintage clothing items.

This year, Coachella attendees are invited to attend sustainable fashion competition Hosted by Coachella’s sustainability partner, Global Inheritance. Contestants must fit into four categories: Pre-U Vintage, Saving Receipts, Planet Friendly and Coachella 2026 Remix.

The competition wasn’t just about the beauty of a dress, it was about storytelling. Contestants registered prior to Weekend 1 and, if selected as finalists, took to the stage inside the Desert Sky Tent to present their costumes live. Each participant told the audience about the inspiration behind their looks, from the origin of the materials to the creative process behind assembling them.

As someone who attended Casual Fridays’ Weekend 1 experience, the contest shapes connections, feeling like an educational experience that encourages festival-goers to think differently about consumption and creativity in clothing.

Weekend 1 saw strong participation and energy around the event, with attendees gathering to watch the finalists present their designs and hear the stories behind them. According to organizers, the launch of the event received an overwhelmingly positive response, highlighting the growing interest in sustainability within festival culture.

In recent years, festival style has evolved from purely trend-driven looks to more intentional, practical and eco-conscious choices – with vintage, reworked and long-lasting pieces being prioritized rather than disposable outfits. Throughout the festival you can see a variety of looks that major brands can’t compete with, setting all kinds of new trends that even fast fashion can’t compete with.

With the launch of this sustainable fashion show, Weekend 1 showcased and showcased all kinds of sustainable fashion statements.
