Google’s Gemini AI app may soon start showing ads, company executive reportedly hints during earnings call
Google has been showing ads and sponsored search results within AI overview answers for several months. Furthermore, various reports in the past have highlighted that the Mountain View-based tech giant is also testing ads in AI mode. Now, the company may be preparing to bring ads to its conversational AI assistant, Gemini AI app. During Google’s quarterly earnings conference call, a company executive reportedly told company shareholders and reporters that the tech giant is ready to start showing ads in apps. This comes just months after Sam Altman-led OpenAI announced that it has started rolling out ranked ads to its AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT.
Google is reportedly considering ads in Gemini AI app
A report from Business Insider Claim During the company’s quarterly results conference call, Google’s Chief Business Officer (CBO), Philip Schindler, said that the tech giant is ready to bring ads and sponsored results to the Gemini AI app. The executive explained that while its focus remains on bringing advertising in AI mode, the tech giant believes that “the format that works well in AI mode will be successfully transferred to the Gemini app.”
Talking about the financial aspect of serving ads in the Gemini AI app, the Google executive reportedly said that ads are expected to “play a key role in growing Gemini” if executed well.
Interestingly, the tech giant has already shows Ads in AI overview search results in English on mobile and desktop devices across multiple markets, including India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, US, Australia, and Canada. Ads are displayed based on the user’s query along with the content of the AI observation. As of now, AI Overview shows text and Shopping ads from existing search results, as well as “Shopping and Performance Max” campaigns.
If Google introduces advertisements in Gemini AI apps, it could compete directly with US-based AI giant, OpenAI. in February, The Sam Altman-led tech firm announced it has started serving ads in its AI-supported chatbot ChatGPT For free and Go users in the US. Announcing this, the company said that advertised suggestions “do not influence” ChatGPT’s AI-generated responses. Additionally, ChatGPT ads only appear to logged-in adult users, but are now appearing to users under 18.
