Samsung brings Ikea smart home support to its platform with an important caveat
ikea’s new 2026 smart home And home safety equipment Thanks to them, it quickly earned several spots on my recommendation list. high strength (many around $10) and full compatibility with cross-brands smart home standard case. The big caveat was that you needed a miter hub Apple TV or one echo showTo use the equipment. The step now becomes easier with Samsung’s latest SmartThings expansion announced Tuesday.
First, you needed Ikea Own Dirigera HubAbout $110, and a Samsung’s SmartThings Hub To make Ikea appliances work in the SmartThings app. Now all you need is a compatible SmartThings hub, and it can support Ikea’s Matter devices, which number around 25 in total.
Those devices include smart plugAccess sensors for doors, motion detectors, temperature and air quality sensors, Smart Bulbs and Lamps And much more to experiment with. The low cost makes Ikea a particularly good choice for affordable smart home add-ons in apartments, dorms, and first homes, with fast setup thanks to Mate support.
To use Ikea’s devices you’ll need a dedicated Matter Hub from SmartThings or another platform.
If this sounds interesting, there is one important thing you should understand. Your Galaxy phone or similar mobile device cannot act as a SmartThings hub on its own. Instead, you’ll need a separate hub, like Samsung’s $130 Aeotec To make Ikea appliances work smoothly with SmartThings.
When I contacted Samsung, their spokesperson provided me with a handy list of other SmartThings hubs that might do the job and save you some money. “Your Samsung TV, smart monitor, Family Hub refrigerator, or sound bar may already be a smart home hub, ready to connect and control devices without the need to purchase and set up another device,” Samsung told me. “For those who prefer a standalone hub, some other options include the SmartThings Station, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, and the SmartThings Hub v2.”
That’s great news if you’re already a fan of SmartThings and have a hub ready to go, but if not it’s quite an expensive investment. Keep in mind, Ikea’s Matter devices work with Amazon Alexa/Echo, other hubs provided by Apple homepod and the new Apple TV, Google’s Nest Hub And so on. If you have any of these devices in your home, Ikea’s sensors are a great way to save while still embracing home tech.
